Managing the End of Daylight Savings

Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, 6th April! That means the clocks “fall back” an hour, and your baby’s schedule might feel slightly off. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered!

Why Does the Time Change Affect Babies?

Babies have internal clocks that don’t adjust as easily as adults. A sudden shift can cause:

  • Early wake-ups

  • Overtiredness

  • Disrupted naps

How to Prepare Before the Time Change

There are two ways you can do this:

Gradual Adjustment: Shift bedtime 15 minutes earlier each night a week before the End of Daylight Savings.

  • Morning Light: Get outside early to help reset their body clock.

  • Bedtime Routine: Keep it consistent for smoother transitions.

Cold turkey approach- Structure your new time around the end of daylight savings time. This approach is good for babies who adjust easily.

  • Wake at the new time of 7:00 am

  • Keep consistent with your new times of sleep

What to Do After the Time Change

  • Stick to the new time right away.

  • Keep the room dark in the morning to prevent early wake-ups.

  • Be patient—it can take a few days to a week for your little one to adjust!

 Adjust the sleep environment

  • Blackout curtains: Prevent early wake-ups.

  • Sound machine: Helps with unfamiliar wake times.

  • Stick to the same bedtime routine: Familiarity makes transitions easier.

Remember, a little consistency and grace go a long way! Some babies adjust quickly, while others need more time—both are normal. Patience is key! Most babies will take around 3-7 days to fully adjust.
